The renovation of a housing block in Munich Haidhausen required the design of a new building to fill up a vacant lot in the street. Most of the surrounding houses are monumental buildings that used to be commercial spaces and offices. The new building was integrated into the renovation of the whole block. Subsequently, it incorporates the entrance to the central parking garage that encompasses two storeys underneath the courtyard. The modest appearance of the new structure ensures a subtle transition between the old and the new.
Windows in the street facade are diagonally stepped down to meet the height of the adjacent buildings. Located behind these windows is a stairwell with a big skylight, which forms a central feature of the design. The street facade takes after the original 1950’s style of “modern Munich”, thus relating to the historical neighbourhood and blending in with the other buildings in the street. Only at second glance does one notice the features that are particular to the new building. Looking from the courtyard, the building is defined by its cantilevered triangular balconies and large window surfaces.
